The History of The V60 Coffee Brewer

The V60 coffee filter - often called the Hario V60 - is one of the most recognisable pour-over brewers in specialty coffee. Loved for its ability to produce a clean, bright, and expressive cup, it’s a staple in cafés and kitchens around the world.

But where did the V60 come from, and why has it become such a cornerstone of modern coffee brewing?

Where the V60 Began

The V60 was developed in Japan by Hario, a company with a long history in heat-resistant glassware and precision craftsmanship. Hario originally focused on laboratory equipment before turning its attention to coffee brewing - a background that heavily influenced the V60’s thoughtful, functional design.

The name “V60” refers to the brewer’s conical shape, which sits at a 60-degree angle.

What Makes the V60 Design Different?

The V60 wasn’t just another pour-over device - its design introduced several key features that changed how people brewed coffee:

  • A wide opening at the base, allowing water to flow freely

  • Spiral ridges along the inside, which help prevent the filter from sticking and encourage even extraction

  • A conical shape, giving brewers greater control over flow rate and brew time

Together, these elements make it easier to highlight a coffee’s natural flavours and aromas.

The Rise of the V60

The V60 made its debut in the early 2000s and quickly gained traction in specialty coffee shops. At a time when manual brewing was becoming more popular, the V60 stood out for the level of control and customisation it offered.

By adjusting variables like grind size, water temperature, and pouring technique, brewers could fine-tune each cup to suit the coffee they were using - something that wasn’t as achievable with many other brewing methods.

How the V60 Has Evolved

Over the years, Hario has refined the V60 and expanded the range to suit different brewing styles and environments. Today, V60 brewers are available in a variety of materials, including:

  • Ceramic

  • Glass

  • Plastic

  • Stainless steel

Hario has also introduced variations such as the V60 Mini and V60 Drip Decanter, offering flexibility for travel, home use, and café service.

We have just launched our first ever Origami Ceramic Dripper - available in Matte Blue & Pink.

Why the V60 Is Still So Popular

Despite the rise of new brewing gadgets, the V60 has stood the test of time. Its appeal lies in its simplicity, versatility, and transparency - what you put in is what you taste.

For beginners, it’s an accessible way to learn the fundamentals of brewing. For professionals, it remains a reliable tool for showcasing the nuances of high-quality coffee.

The V60 is more than just a piece of brewing equipment - it’s a symbol of the shift toward intentional, hands-on coffee making. From its origins in Japan to its place in cafés worldwide, the V60 has earned its status as a modern classic.

Next time you brew with one, you’re not just making coffee - you’re taking part in a piece of coffee history.
